What a coating does, and what it doesn't
A ceramic coating is a liquid polymer that chemically bonds to your clear coat and cures into a hard, slick layer. It's not a wax and it doesn't wash off. On a car that lives outside through an Ontario winter it does three genuinely useful things.
Salt brine doesn't bond the same way. Winter road film sits on top of the coating instead of keying into the clear coat, so it releases with far less contact during a wash. Less contact is the whole game — most swirl marks in this city come from washing, not from driving.
Chemical resistance. Bird droppings, tree sap and industrial fallout are acidic and will etch bare clear coat if they bake in. A coating buys you time to get to them.
UV stability. Slows the oxidation that turns red and black paint chalky.
What it does not do: stop stone chips, stop scratches from a careless car wash brush, or remove existing swirls. Anyone selling a coating as scratch-proof is overselling it. For impact protection you want paint protection film, and the two are often combined — film on the front end, coating over everything.
Why the correction underneath matters more than the coating
A coating is optically clear and permanent-ish. Whatever the paint looks like on the day it's applied is what you're sealing in for years. Coat a swirled hood and you've locked the swirls under a hard layer that now has to be polished off to fix.
This is the corner that gets cut in cheap coating jobs, and it's most of the price difference you see between quotes in this city. Our coating packages always include correction — single-stage for newer paint, two-stage where the car needs it. We measure the clear coat with a paint depth gauge first, because there's a finite amount of it and you can't put it back.
Straight answer: is it worth it?
Yes if the car lives outside, you're keeping it more than three years, and you'd otherwise be running it through a brush wash all winter.
Probably not if it's garaged, seasonal, leased with under two years to run, or you're selling soon. A quality sealant at a fraction of the cost gets you most of the winter benefit. We'll say so rather than upsell you.

The process
Assessment
Paint depth readings on every panel, under corrected lighting. Ten minutes, no charge.
Decontamination
Iron remover, tar removal, clay treatment. Everything bonded comes off.
Correction
One to three machine stages depending on condition and how much clear coat you have.
Panel wipe and coat
Solvent wipe to strip polishing oils, then coating applied panel by panel.
Cure
Overnight minimum in a heated, enclosed bay. This is not negotiable and it's why the car stays.
Living with a coated car in Mississauga
Winter washing
Wash every two to three weeks through salt season. Touchless is fine on a coated car — that's much of the point. Avoid brush washes; they'll marr the coating exactly as they'd marr paint.
Don't use wax on it
Wax on top of a coating just sits there and dulls the hydrophobic behaviour. Use a pH-neutral shampoo and a coating-safe topper if you want one. We'll give you the list.
Annual check
Bring it in each spring after the salt stops. We'll decontaminate, check the coating is still behaving, and top it if needed. Usually about an hour.

How much is ceramic coating in Mississauga?
From $799 for a sedan on a 2-year coating, up to $1899+ for a multi-stage correction with a 9-year product. The spread is almost entirely the correction underneath, not the bottle. A quote well below this range is usually a coating applied over uncorrected paint.
How long does my car need to stay?
Two to three days for most cars. One day for decontamination and correction, then overnight cure minimum, and we like a morning of settled cure before it goes out into weather. Coating and same-day pickup are not compatible.
Ceramic coating or PPF?
Different jobs. Coating is chemical protection and easier cleaning across the whole car. Film is physical impact protection for the panels that take stone chips. If you drive the 401 daily, film on the front end plus coating over the rest is the combination that actually matters. See Mobile.
Does it really last nine years?
Under manufacturer conditions with annual maintenance, the chemistry lasts. In practice, an Ontario winter with heavy salt and highway sand is harder than the lab. Expect a well-maintained 9-year coating to perform strongly for five or six years and then gradually lose its edge. Anyone promising a decade of untouched performance here is quoting a brochure.
Can you coat a brand new car from the dealer?
Yes, and it's the ideal time — but new does not mean flawless. Most new cars arrive with transport film marks and dealer-applied wash swirls. We still assess and correct before coating. It's usually a single stage rather than three, so it costs less.
